That’s a lot of food!

Nov 14, 2023 | Good News, Greater Saskatoon Catholic School Division

While many children and youth spent their evening of October 31 collecting and counting candy, students at some Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools spent their evening collecting and stacking canned goods, packages of pasta, jars of peanut butter and other non-perishable food.

This year, a total of 33,290 pounds of food was collected (St. Joseph High School collected 16,535 lbs; Bishop James Mahoney and Holy Cross High Schools collected 16,755 lbs). That’s more than the weight of a large male elephant for each school!

Halloweening for Hunger is a long-standing tradition of Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools’ students. This is the 18th year students at St. Joseph High School have gone door-to-door collecting food for the Saskatoon Food Bank & Learning Centre. Students at Bishop James Mahoney High School, with the help of Holy Cross High School students, have joined the initiative.

Student groups signed up for over 200 routes in several Saskatoon neighbourhoods. They delivered flyers to homes so residents could plan their support ahead of time.

Thanks to the great work of students and staff—and the generosity of the people donating food.
