Fr. Penna (left) leads a commissioning service for trustees at the Organization Meeting of GSCS Board of Education

On Monday, November 3, 2025, Greater Saskatoon Catholic School’s Board of Education trustees held their annual Organizational Meeting, at which the board selects a chair, vice-chair, and trustees to represent the board on a variety of committees.

To start the meeting, Rev. Stefano Penna, the bishop’s delegate from the Roman Catholic Diocese of Saskatoon for the board, led a commissioning service for trustees asking for God’s blessings, guidance and wisdom to be upon them. Rev. Penna gave a short reflection on trustees keeping their sites fixed on the horizon—on Jesus, in whom we are to put our trust—to do their work. He used an example of a young pilot in training who was told to focus on the horizon to keep his bearings when navigating the plane.

Diane Boyko was re-elected as chair, and Tim Jelinski was elected to serve as vice-chair.

“I’m blessed to sit at this table with my fellow trustees and to sit as chair as we all work together for the greater glory of God,” said Diane Boyko, chair of Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools’ Board of Education. “Thank you for placing your trust in me in this way as we serve students and families together.”

With 50 schools and over 23,000 students, Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools is Saskatchewan’s largest Catholic school division, providing Catholic faith-based education from pre-kindergarten through Grade 12 in Saskatoon and area, Biggar, Humboldt, Martensville and Warman. We are rooted in faith, growing in knowledge and reaching out to transform the world.

The Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools’ Board of Education consists of 10 elected trustees. Seven at-large trustees represent Saskatoon, and one trustee represents each of our three subdivisions: rural areas around Saskatoon, including Martensville and Warman (Subdivision 1); Humboldt (Subdivision 2); and Biggar (Subdivision 3). The recent passing of trustee Ron Boechler leaves one of the 10 positions vacant. The board has 90 days to decide if they want to request that the Minister of Education allow a vacancy until the next planned election in 2028 or hold a by-election. The at-large structure of Saskatoon trustees ensures all families will still have representation regardless of the decision.
